Areas of Expertise

Neurodiversity

If you are coping with autism, ADHD, or general intellectual disability you may struggle at work especially if your employer does not make allowances.

If you have autism or ADHD, you may also struggle socially, feeling like a square peg in a round hole and experiencing not ‘fitting in’.  You may struggle with closer relationships and feel lonely. You may have problems in dealing with intense feelings.  You may struggle to plan activities and be able to carry them out. This may puzzle you because difficulties that are about how society is organised present challenges for you in how to navigate through life.  You may have low self-esteem as your awareness of your assets and strengths has been eclipsed by your experiences of criticism and rejection.

Our work together would involve two things; firstly, developing an understanding of what challenges your meet and collaboratively exploring strategies and secondly, highlighting the unique strengths you have so that you can use those more.

Trauma

Any experience that you perceive as overwhelming, especially if it was unpredictable and uncontrollable, can cause severe emotional shock and may have long-lasting psychological effects.

If you have experienced events in your life that are having a ‘long-lasting psychological effect’ then it is advisable to seek help as these problems may well have a detrimental impact on your relationships and health. Some examples of the effects of trauma are:- intrusive upsetting memories of the event, flashbacks, nightmares, feelings of intense distress, difficulty falling or staying asleep, feeling depressed and hopeless, suicidal thoughts and feelings, hearing voices, feeling alienated and alone, anger and irritability, and substance abuse.

It is tough to admit that you are not coping and need support – it definitely is not a sign of weakness. Therapy will not require you to jump straight into reliving painful memories – in fact this may not be necessary at all. Developing a range of ways to support you and building skills to manage your emotions are the first critical steps.

So give me a call or use the contact form – we can arrange an initial meeting and decide where to go from there.
